The Devils Arithmetic

This film is about a girl Hannah Stern. She is a pampered Jewish girl who doesnt bother or care about what happened in the Holocaust in 1941, till one night she was transported back into her families tradgic past. As World War Two builds with rage, she is imprisoned in a Nazi comncentration camp with her future Aunt, Rivkah. They struggle as watching the pain of many women and children rise, surviving with little food, a shocking environment and forced to work to their fullest extent. Hannah soon comes to know that Rivkah is her aunt Eva back in the future and starts to understand and appreciate the Jewish customs that her family had endured.

I thought that it was very interesting at what prossess they had to go through when they got brought into a concentration camp. For example getting their hair cut off, having numbers tattooed on their arms, the clothes they wear and how they have to work very hard etc. I also liked how it flowed from one event to another and there were eye catching parts that made you keep watching, like when the boys were hung, i thought it was really sad.

At the start of this movie I think that it could have been explained more about why she had to open that door, and what happens when the door is opened, how it effects everybody else. Another thing that I thought was a put down for this film was in the dark parts, the lights shone really quickly upon their faces, for example when they were in the carts/carriges being taken to the camp. So that we couldn’t actually identify who the character was properly.

I think that the characters were well played and I felt there sorrow when they were sad and their happiness when they were happy. Hannah is a very caring and gentle yet determined character who seemed to keep changing and becoming more aware of whats happening in the world today as the film progressed. The character which I disliked, would be ofcourse the Nazi soldiers who were cruel and nasty to all the Jews that were trembling with fear, whether they were going to die or not.

I think that by the end of this film I was impressed that Hannah met Rivkah again but as Aunt Eva. Also I think this film is really interesting in the sense that I learnt a lot about how it was, and what they went through back in 1941 and onwards. Overall it was a impressing movie and now and again a tear dropping moment, the environment was a big effect on the main story and was well done.

On Saturday my netball team T.A.I Soldiers played against T.A.S Spartons. We arrived at the netball courts at 10:00am for 40minutes of warmup before the game. My grandparents came to watch. We ran around the courts and did some ball skills then before we knew it, it was time to play. We did our cheers then got into our positions. Once the first quarter had pasted we were ahead by a few goals, then the next quarter we were still ahead. Now it was the third quarter and Joan our coach decided to put our shooter into centre and defence into shooter, and that’s when the Spartons gained speed and fell ahead of us. In the final quarter Joan changed the position back, but we werent able to catch back up, the score was 19-24 to the Spartons. We still came second out of “c” grade so that was cool. We won candles which I thought was dumb. I found out afterwards that from my knee and ankle were sore, so I hope it gets better soon.

On the 21st of August 27 students travelled to Porrit stadium to participate in the Inter-Intermediate Cross Country. I was a reserve since I came 7th but I enjoyed goinbg there and having a ice-cream and I also get a badge. Once we arrived at the stadium in Hamilton we got shown around the course then the year seven girls started. At the start they sprinted then gradually started to slow down. On the second lap from Te Awamutu Intermediate Megan was coming first and Shanae was coming third. When the runners came into the finish Megan came 1st by 100-200 metres and then two other girls cam then Shanae came 4th, and thats when all the rest started coming in. Then it was the year seven boys and they came in around the early 20s. Next was the year eight girls and the first person came in around the teens. Then it was the year eight boys and the first person came in at ninth.

At prize giving I think our school came in around second or third in the year eight boys. Then we came back to school and our car had a ice-cream at Mc Donalds then we got changed then went back into our classrooms. I had a great day and hope to go next year!

On the 13 of August the most of Te Awamutu Intermediate participated in cross country. The year 8 girls had to run first while we were all waiting in the ALC in our houses. The next to run was the year 7 boys, then year 7 girls(me) then the year 8 boys. When it was my turn to run we had to run around the courts three times to warm up then we all lined up from people who wanted to come in the first ten at the front. I lined up at the front then we started, I kept with the front people then slowly everybody started to separate and I was coming second. We were on our way around Hazel mere Crescent and Megan was in front of me. I started getting tired when I was running up Raikes Avenue and Shanae past me, same with Taylor and I was coming third. Once we had got up to Sherwin Park I was coming eighth and I saw the end and I sprinted hard and made my way to seventh placing. I got into Inter-Intermediate cross country which will be on Tuesday. My grandma came to watch then took me to the library and I got a library card so I could get a book out for my bookreveiw. Ive already finished it because it was interesting.

I had a great time at crosscountry and can’t wait for next time.

On Thursday I went to Hamilton and stayed till Sunday. On Friday it was my mums friends Mel and Johns wedding. At about 11:00 Taylia, Maile(Mel’s children) and me went to Jay Jays and bought some pants and a shirt and then went to farmers and bought me two new pairs of shoes, I was happy about that. At about 12:00 we had to start getting ready, Talyia gave me one of her dresses to wear. At the wedding it only took a few minutes because it wasn’t a long one like at a church it was at a court house(or something). After they went for the photos but mum, Leanna, Aaliyah, Dominic(friends) and me went up town to kill time before the big dinner at Valentines. Once it was 6:00 we made our way there and when Mel came she was wearing a big cloak made out of feathers, it looked cool. We had cups that lighted up and we could eat all we wanted. Once we had finished eating us kids played pool till it was time to leave. I went home and then everyone started to party, there was lots of beer and the kids played spotlight outside then danced in the lounge. It was fun and Talyia who is 20 invited all her friends to party in the lounge, she bought a stereo which had two small speakers, two medium speakers and two large speakers. It was fun that night. When it was time to sleep we watched Candyman which is a thriller and I was the only person that stayed awake till the end.

The next day I had to go for a rehearsal for a different wedding next weekend and I have to walk up the aisle first up on to the stage and we also get to go in a limo!!! I can’t wait!!

On Friday I walked down to the netball courts to trial for netball. Just before we were about to start Mrs Hose came and said for any girls that were going to trial for basketball to come now because there was only one person there so me and Georgia and some other people went to the ALC. Then we trialled for basketball, we have another trial on Friday. I think I did pretty well.

After that in the next section we went down to the netball courts and I played goalkeepers against Saige who is really good, I played pretty well and got lots of intercepts. I thought I had a good chance of getting in because I was already in inter-intermediate netball. She said she had loads of girls trial and said she would cut the number down and have another trial to find a team for year sevens and eights. I looked on the hall today and my name was there thankfully. The next trial is tomorrow on Wednesday so I hope I get in!!
